Dumplings - Interdisciplinary Project realized in Spacial.io
Interactive, multidisciplinary project realized at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Titled "Dumplings," it is a virtual 3D space built in Blender and hosted on Spacial.io for online visitors to explore. The project explores the theme of heritage.
What is heritage?
Heritage usually refers to the inheritance or legacy of physical objects, traditions, values, cultural practices, or other aspects passed down from one generation to another. It contains aspects of a community's or individual's history and identity. Preserving and understanding heritage is often considered important for maintaining a sense of identity, fostering a connection to the past and a sense of belonging.
Efforts to protect and conserve heritage often involve historical preservation, cultural education, and other practices to ensure that those elements are passed on to the future generations.
I asked myself: is it possible to digitalize heritage?
How to make an essence
of the heritage?
My project is telling the history of the heritage
- heritage of my country, my culture but also my family. It’s based on my grandmother’s voice reciting the dumplings recipe - one of the most famous Polish national dishes (and in my opinion the one of the most delicious ones). She’s speaking with strong regional dialect. The recipe is kind of chaotic and improvised (the text of the narration wasn’t scripted at all) which is making it more authentic.
Old-style kitchen equipments are floating above the surface of water. All scene exist beyond time and space in the same way as memory and heritage.
The path
The path of the scene is designed as a loop - to hear all the recipe you have to make all way from the pot to the dumplings plate. The objects are literal illustration for the dumplings recipe. When you finish the path and make it to the plate it’s possible to do the path again, but it’s not possible to go from the starting point directly to the dumplings plate - because there is no shortcuts with making dumplings.
